SUPPORTIVE CARE IS EXTREMELY VITAL! GS-441524 CANNOT CURE YOUR KITTY WITHOUT ADDITIONAL SUPPORTIVE CARE!
Most cats who pass away in the first week do so because of lack of supportive care.
🍽️ FEEDING
If your cat is not eating, he/she needs to be syringe fed to protect the liver. Please see the Assisted Feeding tab.
- 🔻 Lack of nutrition leads to hepatic lipidosis which will kill your cat before FIP does.
- 🔻 Adult cats need 200 calories a day. Kittens need 250 a day.
🛑 BELLY FLUID & CHEST FLUID
DO NOT HAVE BELLY FLUID DRAINED without following the below:
- 🔻 Draining all the abdominal fluid is very risky and can cause your cat to go into shock and pass away.
- 🔻 If fluid must be drained it should be no more than 30% and only if your cat's belly becomes so full that eating, bowel movements or breathing are affected.
🟢 CHEST FLUID can ABSOLUTELY and must be drained if kitty's breathing is labored. This fluid can be drained completely.
🏥 STABILIZATION & WEIGHT
Your cat may need to be hospitalized for supportive care such as blood transfusions, subcutaneous fluids, or oxygen. 🚑
⌚ If your kitty isn't stable or begins to decline, you can send email to us. We may recommend that you double dose at the beginning (every 12 hours). Please check in with us every day until stable.
⚖️ Weigh your cat at least once a week. The dose increases with weight gain. We do not reduce the dose if there is weight loss. Keep a weight log.
💉 DOSING & ACCURACY
- Please purchase a baby scale. Weigh your kitty in kilograms.
- UNDER-DOSING increases the risk of relapse and resistance.
- ➡️ Dose calculator: Click Here (Injections/Suspension only).
- 🍗 Fasting is recommended for oral meds: No food 1 hour before, no big meal for 1 hour after.
⬆️ CRITICAL RULES
DON'T MISS a dose. Dosing should be at about the same time every day. Start treatment as soon as possible.
Injections: If you leak/miss, redo half or full dose based on how much missed. Clean area with diluted dish soap.
Oral: Vomit within 30m = redo whole dose. Within 2h = redo half. After 2h = no redo.
⬆️ PLAN AHEAD on ordering GS so that you don't run out.
🔹 VET SUPPORT ITEMS
- Cerenia for nausea and mirtazapine for appetite stimulant.
- Prednisolone (steroid) can help stability at start. Usually weaned after a week.
